Nunkie Theatre Company presents
three riveting one-man shows
based on the ghost stories of M R James

A Pleasing Terror

Oh, Whistle…

A Warning to the Curious

Count Magnus

Performed by R M Lloyd Parry

Over a century after their first publication, M. R. James' Ghost Stories of an Antiquary remain the most admired supernatural tales in the English language. Originally the author himself performed them to friends at Christmas in King’s College, Cambridge. Now Nunkie Theatre Company has brought six of the eeriest and most entertaining back to life, in three gripping one-man shows.

Each performance lasts approximately 100 minutes and contains two of M R James' ghost stories.

A Pleasing Terror
In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees. In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford.

Oh, Whistle…
Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, my Lad
– a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is considered by many to be James’ masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a spine-chilling story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.
Oh, Whistle… won the Dracula Society’s 2007 Hamilton Deane Award for Best Performance in the Gothic Genre.

A Warning to the Curious
Lost Hearts features one of James's most memorable black magicians, the predatory scholar Mr Abney. It is complemented here by A Warning to the Curious in which a young archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure. The English seaside has never looked so menacing…

Count Magnus
In the classic spinechiller Count Magnus a travel-writer’s over-inquisitiveness leads to a breathless, diabolical chase from darkest Sweden to rural Essex. Denmark is the setting for Number 13, where a hotel room with the famously unlucky number conceals a ghastly and baffling secret.

These shows are suitable for ages 13+ and contain moments of pleasing terror!
